Primavera: The Sheffield Tango Festival

Header_FB Event 2020-2bf

The first Sheffield Tango Festival was held in May 2019, and we were overwhelmed by the amount of positive feedback. Thank you to all the lovely dancers who came to support us.

Our main aim was to offer an event which was friendly and welcoming to all. I think we got pretty close to succeeding, so we’re going to do it again next year… on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1-3 May 2020, to be precise.

We have listened to all your comments, and after discussion we’ve tweaked a few things, for example, the afternoon dances will be upstairs in the main ballroom.

Booking forms will be available shortly. We’ll add the date and link here as soon as all the tweaks have been tweaked and everything is as simple and straightforward as possible. If you’re on our mailing list you will receive immediate notification of the booking date.

Last year we had to close bookings some time before the event as we had reached capacity. To avoid disappointment, therefore, please book for any workshop or milonga you wish to attend. We cannot accept admissions on the door for any part of the festival once maximum figures have been reached.

We are looking again to provide an appropriate leader/follower balance, especially for workshops. Please try to book with a partner whenever possible, although if you wish to book as a single leader or follower, please do so early. We’ll do our best to accommodate all.

Again, we’ll have great teachers and DJs from Buenos Aires, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. For further details as we add them, check out the website menu at the top of the page.

We shall continue to add news and information, pictures and videos so be sure to bookmark this page!

Thank you. See you in May!

An Early Bird Reminder

Please note that The Sheffield Tango Festival Early Bird pricing finishes at the end of February, so please send in your booking forms as soon as possible. Note too that if you’ve sent in a form but haven’t paid you need to do so by 29 February to get the Early Bird rate.

Starting Tango or Exchanging Roles?

The Sheffield Tango Festival Beginners’ Workshop Series taught by Lucas Gastiarena & Melanie Jarman has two aims:

1 to provide a comprehensive introduction to the basics of Argentine Tango for beginners and those who wish to perfect their technique, revisit basic steps and learn to use them fluently on the dance floor.

2 to offer the opportunity to learn a new role. Argentine tango is a dance that relies for its best expression on a deep understanding of our partner’s role. This series of three workshops allows you to exchange roles in a friendly, undemanding atmosphere.

A bargain price of £50 gets you a package of three 90-minute workshops plus access to the Afternoon Milongas on Saturday and Sunday. If you already have a full dance pass you can book the three beginner/role exchange workshops for just £35.

And don’t forget, if you’re coming to the Festival and don’t want to leave your partner at home, book them on this course. It could be a lovely surprise!

Sheffield Tango Festival Green Eco Policy

Hi to everyone who will be attending our second Sheffield Tango Festival in May 2020.

We are already preparing for your arrival, and we can’t wait to see you, and spend the weekend enjoying workshops with some of the most talented Tango teachers in the world. And of course dancing some sublime Tandas with all of you!

As a preliminary to the festival we are thinking about some of our wider objectives, and we would like your help with something that is at the top of Global agendas. This year we want to be as Eco friendly and responsible as we possibly can be. We don’t want to continually add to the overwhelming plastic pollution that the world has become engulfed by, and we would ask for your help in reducing unnecessary waste.

We would ask all of you attending the festival to bring your own refillable water bottle, and your own refillable cups. We will provide an endless supply of water and other drinks to keep you hydrated and happy. We just don’t want to provide cups and plastic glasses that will be thrown away and wasted. We have been to a couple of Tango events recently where the same request has been made, and it was very successful. Let’s do our own bit for the environment by becoming an increasingly green tango community.

Can’t wait to see you all in May 😘

Tango Vals with Isabel & Nelson

Isabel Costa and Nelson Pinto dancing to the vals Cuatro Palabras (Orq. Juan D’Arienzo) at Escapada Milonguera, Asturias.

There are a few places left for leaders or lead/follow couples on Nelson and Isabel’s workshop Mysteries of Valcecito (all levels). You will be involved in the analysis of the possibilities and rhythmic development of the tango vals, and look at changes in dynamics and combinations of chained movements.
